Career Planning Timeline
Freshman Year- Awareness Stage
ü Take a self –assessment inventory. In Career Services we offer the Myers-Briggs and the Strong Interest Inventory.
ü Register for the one credit IC 205, "Majors, Careers, Self-Exploration" and learn how to integrate these areas of knowledge into sound decision-making strategies.
ü Work with your advisor to develop an initial curriculum plan that allows you to take a variety of courses
ü Evaluate what you are learning in class, what skills you are developing, and what classes you enjoy the most
ü Examine your extracurricular activities and think about why you enjoy particular hobbies, volunteer work or sports
ü Prepare your resume to assess what skills you already have and what skills would you like to develop. Career Services can help you develop a professional looking resume
Sophomore Year- Exploration
Stage
ü Do some “informational interviewing” and “networking” as a way to know people in different occupations and learn more about what they do
ü Attend the Career Expo held in September at the Kohl Center to meet employers and explore what’s out there in the world of occupations
ü Take a part-time, volunteer or summer job to “test out” a career field
ü Solidify your curriculum plan with your advisor
ü Get involved in at least one extra curricular activity
ü Attend the Etiquette Dinner
Junior Year- Experience
Stage
ü Plan to have an internship experience related to your field. Check with your advisor about receiving credit for your experience
ü Attend the job and internships fairs throughout the year. One such an event is the Wisconsin Private Colleges Job & Internship Fair held every year in February
ü Continue to be involved in student organizations and work towards a leadership position
ü Participate in the Leadership Series and Leadership Conferences
ü Cultivate relationships with your advisor or other faculty members so that you will have good references for graduate school or employment
ü Register for the one credit IC405 Course, Job Search Strategies for Juniors & Seniors
ü Discuss graduate school options with the faculty and Career Services
ü Participate in Mock Interviews
ü Attend the Life After Edgewood events
ü Take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) , the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), etc if you’re heading to Graduate School
Senior Year- Choice Stage
ü Complete a second or third internship or other practical experience
ü If you haven’t taken it yet, register for the one credit IC405 Course, Job Search Strategies for Juniors & Seniors
ü Attend the Life After Edgewood events in the spring
ü Participate in Mock Interviews in the Fall and Spring
ü Identify a career objective or target
ü Research potential employers using the resources in Career Services
ü Apply for graduate school early in the fall semester
ü Continue to attend job fairs and networking events
