Tutoring Basics
“I don't need a tutor. I know what's going
on.”
“It was just a small mistake--I won't make it
again.”
“Tutoring isn’t for me. I’m an ‘A’
student!”
Have you ever caught yourself making statements
like these? Contrary to common beliefs, tutoring is for
everyone!
People use peer tutors for a variety of reasons.
Some people get a peer tutor because they are having
difficulties understanding the course and need an extra
resource. Some people are unable to motivate themselves
for a course, and would like to work with someone who is very
excited about their subject. Still, others like another
knowledgeable person to talk with to find out whether or not
they are really on the right track! Tutoring can also
help you:
- Improve your self-confidence and self-esteem
- Motivate yourself
- Understand the material
- Improve your attitude towards school and learning
- Work at your own pace
Getting a peer tutor is easy to do at Edgewood
College. First, you make an appointment with Johnny Craig.
He can help you look at your course, and find
ways that you can help yourself. These could be different
ways to study, read your textbook, or organizing your work.
Next, he will give you the name of the peer
tutor assigned to you. It will be your job to contact that
tutor, and schedule your first appointment.
Depending on the class, you could be meeting
with your peer tutor one on one, or you could be meeting with
other classmates in a group format. Both are beneficial
experiences! In a study group, you have other people to
ask questions, and can also answer others' questions, better
cementing your own knowledge. It also helps you to realize
that you aren't the ONLY person who is struggling!
