Advising

1.  What is the purpose of meeting with my academic advisor?

Advising is integral to each student's academic program.  All degree-seeking students are assigned to an academic advisor.  Your advisor is someone who can guide and support you with decision-making during your time at Edgewood.

Although you are required to meet with your advisor each semester in order to register for the upcoming term, you should meet with him/her at least one other time each semester in order to:

  • Continue discussing the requirements necessary to complete your degree

  • MAP out your classes over the next several years

  • Determine how many years it will take to graduate

  • Determine if adding a minor or a double major would be beneficial to you

  • Fill out the Declaration of Major and/or Minor Forms required by the Registrars

  • Locate campus and community resources that can help you as a student

  • Link your academic preparation with internships, employment opportunities and/or graduate school

  • Fulfill your Human Issues Requirements once you reach 60 credits

Advisors hold regular office hours each week during school terms for students to drop in or call.  Hours are posted on or by the advisor's office doors.

2.  How do I change my advisor?

Any student can change their advisor, however, freshmen are not eligible to change their advisor during their first semester unless there are extenuating circumstances.

There are 3 ways to request a change of advisor:

  1. Stop in the Academic Dean's Office located at 222 DeRicci Hall.

  2. Call the Academic Dean's Office at (608) 663-2200.

  3. Fill out the request form on-line.   Change of Major    Change of Minor

3.  How many credit hours are required to be at Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing?

Students are classified according to the number of credits earned.  Those who meet the entrance requirements are classified as freshmen.  Students with 28 semester hours of credit are classified as sophomores; those with 60 semester hours are classified as juniors; those with 90 semester hours are classified as seniors.

4.  What is the Honors Program and how do I apply for the program?

The Honors Program is designed to meet the needs of able, motivated students by providing opportunities for intellectual and social development in
          and out of the classroom.

5.  What is the maximum number of credits I can take?

In order to be considered full-time status, students must carry a credit load of at least 12 credits.  The full-time tuition package covers 17 credits.  Once a student reaches full-time status of 12 credits, he/she pays for 17 credits.  Students are eligible to register for 18 credits each semester.  Semester loads exceeding 18 credits are rare and should be considered carefully.  Semester loads over 18 credits must be approved by the Academic Dean's Office.  In order to graduate in four years, students must carry an average of 15 credits per semester.

A student who is full time for two semesters in an academic year is permitted to take a maximum of 34 credits during the two semesters and Winterim of that year (not including summer).  A credit load over 34 credits would require an additional payment per credit.

6.  Can I repeat a course?

Most courses may not be repeated for additional credit.  A student may choose to repeat a course in order to improve a poor or failing grade.  Both grades earned are included in the GPA calculation, but the credits are only earned once (provided at least one of the courses had a passing grade).  Both courses and grades will appear on the transcript in the terms they were taken and the repeated course will be noted as "R" (repeated).

In some courses where the content changes from one term to another, it may be possible to earn credits more than once.

7.  What does it mean to "audit" a class?

Full-time students may sit in or audit courses with no additional tuition charge.  Person's other than full-time students who attend or audit a course will be charged the current per-hour audit fee, except graduates of Edgewood College and senior citizens over 60 who will be charged a discounted audit fee.

Permission to audit requires consent of the instructor.  Audit status permits the person to attend the class but does not authorize participation in class discussion or evaluation by the instructor.  The explicit consent of the instructor is required for active participation in the class.  Audit students are admitted on a space-available basis.

This policy applies only to regular courses other than laboratory and nursing clinical courses and not to special programs, workshops, institutes, etc.  The college reserves the right to withdraw permission to attend or to audit and refund the audit fee if the circumstances in a particular course should make such a withdrawal and refund advisable.

8.  How do I take a course at UW-Madison as an Edgewood Student?

In order to supplement the instructional resources of Edgewood College and provide expanded opportunities to students, the University of Wisconsin-
Madison and Edgewood College have an agreement by which Edgewood students may take courses at UW-Madison through the
Collaborative Program and have these courses and grades appear on their official Edgewood record, and have them included in the Edgewood GPA.
Courses taken must be applicable to the student’s Edgewood College degree.

9.  How can I make sure I graduate in four years?

For most majors, you need 120 credits to graduate from Edgewood.  Students must carry an average of 15 credits per semester to reach 120 credits in 4 years.  Consult the college catalog for majors requiring more than 120 credits.

It is important to work with your academic advisor early in your college career to MAP out your academic program in order to graduate in the timeframe that is important to you.

10.  What are the graduation requirements?

You can help ensure a smooth final semester and an accurate academic record by following the graduation guidelines.

12.  Do I need to meet with my advisor before I register?

YES!  Advising is mandatory each semester in order to register.

13.  What are my responsibilities as a student when working with my advisor?

In order to make progress toward your academic and career goals, your responsibilities as a student are to:

  • Schedule an appointment with your advisor at least twice a semester.  Once for general planning and another for registration.

  • Keep your academic advisor updated with your current e-mail address and phone number.

  • Read and respond to all e-mails from your academic advisor.

  • Read the academic policies outlined on p. 34-48 of the college catalog.  Prepare questions for your advisor in areas that need further explanation.  You are ultimately responsible for knowing this information.

  • Be prepared for your appointments by bringing your updated degree checklists and MAP worksheet.

  • Accept responsibility for your academic progress.

14.  What if I don't know my PIN number?

Bring your ID to the Registrars office to request a PIN number.  For security reasons, this can not be given over the phone.

15.  I have a registration hold, what do I do?

Determine what type of registration hold you have as indicated on the first page when you log onto EdgeReg and contact the appropriate office for further information.  If it's an advising hold, schedule an appointment with your academic advisor.

16.  What do I do if I need help deciding on a Major?

If you need help deciding on a major, the key thing to remember is - DON'T WAIT!  Choosing a major involves learning about yourself and asking "what am I good at", and "what are my values and goals?"  It also means finding out what you can do with potential majors and how to best prepare for a career in a chosen field.

You are encouraged to work with the Career Services Office to access your interests, skills and values and how they relate to your future career.  They have professional career counselors ready to help you through the entire decision-making process.  They are located in the Student Resource Center, DeRicci 206.  Call (608) 663-2281 to make an appointment today!

17.  How do I make arrangements if I am a student with a disability?

Students who may require an academic accommodation, due to a disability, should contact the Disability Services Coordinator at (608) 663-2281.  Edgewood College provides academic accommodations for students who have a documented disability, have completed an intake process, and have developed a documented accommodation plan.  It is the student's responsibility to request an accommodation and provide documentation.

18.  What do I do if I'm having a problem in one of my classes?

Talk with your instructor.  Visit his or her office hours, and ask for assistance.  Then, go to the Learning Support Services (206 DeRicci Hall).  Someone there can talk with you about specific study techniques for individual subjects and classes, and can also provide you with tutoring, if needed.  Create a study group with other peers in your class.  Learning with other students is a great way to learn!  If you can't get a group together, try to find at least one other person who will share their notes and insights.
