Incorporate the Writing Center into your class

Your students may be reluctant to use the Writing Center, even though you do your best to recommend it. Here are some ways that might make it easier for your students to take the first step:

Ask a tutor or the Writing Specialist to visit your class.
This is typically a five- or ten-minute visit, to show a friendly face, pass out brochures, advertise the current hours, and answer questions. It’s nice for your students to see that the tutors really are their peers.

Ask the Writing Specialist to do a longer presentation.
This might be an overview of the writing process, help with citation style, revising vs. editing, dealing with writer’s block, or something else that your students are struggling with. If you are interested in this, please contact me several weeks ahead of time.

Invite a tutor or the Writing Specialist to work with your peer editing groups.
If you have students give responses to each other’s writing, the tutor can come in for one class period and help out. Or you could send a group down to the Writing Center during class time. Again, please arrange this with me well ahead of time.
