Common Myths
FALSE. Everyone needs help at some point
in his or her life! In fact, many English majors bring
papers to the Writing Center, just to get a second opinion!
Math majors will go to the Math Lab to refresh their algebra
skills. Even “smart” people will reach a class where they
stumble! A truly smart person admits that he/she could use
extra help.
FALSE. A tutor can help you
understand what is going on in the class, and help you learn the
basics so you can do your assignment. Having anyone else
do your homework is a violation of the academic honesty policy.
You would both suffer consequences.
FALSE. It could, but your grade is
supposed to be a reflection on how much you have learned in a
course. If you do the work and seek assistance when you need
it, chances are your grades will improve! Merely attending
tutoring sessions and not doing any outside work is not the way
to get an "A."
