Note Cards
Creating and using note cards can alleviate
anxiety about remembering facts throughout an academic term as
well as provides a portable study tool. An additional
advantage of using note cards is to present written information
out of sequence. This will help you learn the information free
of association to the information it precedes and follows.
They are especially helpful when trying to learn new vocabulary.
- 3 x 5 cards can hold important information from notes
and reading. Write the clue or question on one side, and
the answer on the other.
- Begin compiling the cards early in the term. Carry the
cards with you and review the information many times during
the day and evening.
- The information that does not come to mind readily can
be reviewed more often or placed in a “critical” stack.
Repetition is a great way to learn the material.
Foreign Languages. Are you
taking French, or Spanish? Place English on one side, and
your language on the other.
Science. Science courses often
contain a mountain of new vocabulary words. By placing the
word on one side of the card and the definition on the opposite
side, you can quiz yourself any time of the day or week.
Math Classes. Are you trying to
memorize a process, or equation, but cannot remember what its
use is? Place the formula on one side, and its purpose on
the other. By flipping through your note cards, you can
learn both at the same time, and prevent confusion by exam day.
Not only do you have the convenience of an
instant quizzing tool, but in order to make the cards, you force
yourself to study!
