Tutoring Services

Is tutoring available for my course?

Possibly.  Tutoring is available for most introductory level, undergraduate courses, depending upon availability of student tutors.  If you want to know if someone is available for your specific course, contact Johnny Craig

Walk-in math and writing tutoring is also available for all students.  Follow these links for more information.  Math Lab | Writing Center

What type of tutoring is available?

Depending on the course, availability of peer tutors, and the work study budget of LSS, tutoring is provided in a walk-in, 1-1, or study group basis.  For more information, go to the peer tutoring section of the LSS website or contact Johnny Craig.

How can students request tutoring?

Have them contact Johnny Craig in Learning Support Services.  He will discuss Edgewood's tutoring program, and also give them study tips for their course.  Students may also apply on-line at http://edgenet.edgewood.edu/LSS/pt_request_form.htm

Why is there a deadline to request a tutor?

The last day to request a peer tutor, is the same day as the last day to drop a class.  At this point, there are only four or five weeks left in the semester.  Learning Support Services strives to help students become independent learners--part of that is helping students make responsible decisions regarding their academic careers.  While we are able to help someone who wishes to work on a class throughout the semester, tutoring is not as effective for "damage control," or last minute cramming.  And, since all of our tutors are peer tutors (current Edgewood students), it becomes difficult (or  impossible!) to hire and train students for tutoring at the end of the semester--also the peer tutor's busiest time.

I have a student who would be an exceptional tutor. What can I do?

Let Johnny Craig know in Learning Support Services!  We always want to provide the best possible services for our students.  You can also fill out our easy on-line form!  Click here

Whom do you hire?

We look for students who received a “B” or better in the courses they wish to tutor and have a firm understanding of course content.  We need students with good communication skills who can work with students with a variety of different needs.  It is important that our peer tutors are sensitive to the needs of all students and have confidence in their abilities.  Patience is essential.

Are students paid to tutor?

Peer tutors are a work study students, so students are paid the current work study rate.  Training is also included.  Also, being a peer tutor looks great on a resume, and also helps students develop and refine their leadership and communication skills.ing services.
