Meet the Peer Tutors!

Become a peer tutor

Peer Tutor Request Form

“I don't need a tutor.  I know what's going on.”

“It was just a small mistake--I won't make it again.”

“Tutoring isn’t for me.  I’m an ‘A’ student!”

Have you ever caught yourself making statements like these?  Contrary to common beliefs, tutoring is for everyone!

Benefits of Tutoring

People use peer tutors for a variety of reasons.  Some people get an peer tutor because they are having difficulties understanding the course and need an extra resource.  Some people are unable to motivate themselves for a course, and would like to work with someone who is very excited about their subject.  Still, others like another knowledgeable person to talk with to find out whether or not they are really on the right track!

  • Improve your self-confidence and self-esteem

  • Motivate yourself

  • Understand the material

  • Improve your attitude towards school and learning

  • Work at your own pace

Common Myths

I don’t need a tutor because I’m really smart.
FALSE.
Everyone needs help at some point in his or her life!  In fact, many English majors bring papers to the Writing Center, just to get a second opinion!  Math majors will go to the Math Lab to refresh their algebra skills.  Even “smart” people will reach a class where they stumble!  A truly smart person admits that he/she could use extra help.

Tutors will do my homework for me.
FALSE
.  A tutor can help you understand what is going on in the class, and help you learn the basics so you can do your assignment.  Having anyone else do your homework is a violation of the academic honesty policy.  You would both suffer consequences.

Going to tutoring sessions will raise my grades.
FALSE
.  It could, but your grade is supposed to be a reflection on how much you have learned in a course.  If you do the work and seek assistance when you need it, chances are your grades will improve!  Merely attending tutoring sessions and not doing any outside work is not the way to get an "A."

Students enrolled in introductory, undergraduate classes who have satisfied the pre-requisites of the course.

How much will it cost?

Nothing!  Services are FREE!  However, our peer tutors' time is very valuable, and we must pay them for all scheduled hours.  If you need to cancel or will be late, you must call to let them know.

How do I make arrangements to be tutored?

Call 663-3210 or 663-2281 to set up a brief appointment with Sara Anderson.  She will go over all tutoring policies, study skills for your course, and attempt to find you a peer tutor.  For writing or math classes, visit the writing center or math lab.  New!  Fill out a request form on-line at http://edgenet.edgewood.edu/LSS/APE_request_form.htm.

For what courses is tutoring available?

The availability will vary by semester.  An emphasis is placed on providing tutoring for introductory-level, undergraduate courses, but LSS staff will attempt to find peer tutors for any course for which a request is made.  Please be aware that it is often not possible to find an peer tutor for upper-level courses.  We will attempt to find an peer tutor for each request made; however, we cannot guarantee one.  Tutoring services are not available for graduate courses.

Where does tutoring take place?

Your first appointment will take place in Sonderegger 408 (the SRC extension office).  Most other appointments will take place there as well, but all MUST occur on the Edgewood College Campus.

When are tutors available?

The Math Lab and Writing Center have scheduled hours.  All other tutoring is done by appointment.  Tutoring services are not offered for winterim or summer courses.

How long is a tutoring session?

The typical tutoring session lasts for one hour and occurs once each week.

Who will tutor me?

All peer tutors at Edgewood are other students who have taken the course before and earned at least a “B.”  They are hired based on faculty recommendations and are trained to help you.

What can I do if no peer tutor is available for the course I request?

Your instructor is always the best resource for the course!  You should meet with him or her during office hours, or schedule an appointment.  Check your syllabus for the office, phone number, and office hours.  You may also make an appointment with LSS staff to learn study strategies for the course.  LSS staff may also be able to help you create a study group for the course.  Call 663-2281 or 663-3210 for more information.
